US stocks waver as Comey speaks, but dollar holds gains

The main US stock benchmark dipped slightly into the red while the dollar held its gains as investors eyed the former FBI director’s testimony before Congress.

The S&P 500 was recently down 0.08 per cent to 2,431. Meanwhile, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.03 per cent to 21,179.7 and the Nasdaq Composite climbed 0.02 per cent to 6,298.

The moves come as ex-FBI director James Comey was testifying to the Senate Intelligence Committee over his interactions with US President Donald Trump. While he described one interaction as “disturbing”, investors appeared to take the commentary in stride.

The buck held on to its gains, with the dollar index up 0.29 per cent at 97.03, sitting near the highest levels of the day. The 10-year Treasury yield rose 0.0296 per cent to 2.202 per cent.
