US, Nikkei futures fall, yen strengthens after N Korea missile launch

US stock futures and Nikkei futures fell and the yen jumped against the dollar after North Korea launched a ballistic missile that flew over Japan.

S&P 500 futures fell 0.7 per cent to 2,429.25, while Nikkei futures in Chicago fell 2 per cent after NHK, Japan’s national news service, said the missile fell into the waters off Hokkaido early on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the Japanese yen strengthened 0.8 per cent to ¥108.40 per US dollar.

The news is likely to draw ire from US President Donald Trump who had promised “fire and fury” as Pyongyang had ratcheted up its missile launches.
